Frequently asked questions.

You’ve Got Questions…

We’ve got answers! We love to talk compost, composting, soil, compostable products, and our hometown of St. Augustine! Compost is organic matter that has gone through a decomposition and pathogen removal process to become a nutrient rich soil amendment that you can use to substitute fertilizers and improve topsoil health. Compost must have both Carbon and Nitrogen content from different sources, otherwise it’s ineffective.

  • Where is Darn Good Dirt Made?

Our compost is made at various locations. Each line will have a full list of materials used to make the compost! Our first manufacturer is Indianhead Exploration in the historic City of St. Augustine! It is made from locally sourced bulking agents and converted to a beautiful, rich, black, compost.

    What’s it made from?

Compost is made typically from vegetative debris and some other material. It can be food, manure, humanure, or just more vegetative debris. Our large bags currently are exclusively USAT Certified compost from Indianhead Exploration made from biosolids cake and wood debris. That’s right, they repurpose every households “waste” into a reusable, and amazing, material. They use our proprietary and EPA-recognized ISAP method to decompose the feedstocks and reduce pathogens to manufacture a clean, earthy product that looks and feels like high quality topsoil.

What can I use it on?

Darn Good Dirt brings rich soil to your day to day life. Our packaging is thoughtful and convenient to use. Whether on  those countertop potted plants you can’t walk by at the grocery store, or to help you on your countertop composting way, our dirt can help.

    How much should I use?

Compost is a unique product in that it’s nearly impossible to overuse! Your soil will consistently improve by using more compost. Sprinkle approximately ¼ “ to ½” thick onto plants, grass, countertop, and backyard compost bins. Water and watch it transform.

    Is it safe?

Our compost is completely safe. We use certified compost under the US Composting Council’s Seal of Testing Assurance (STA) program, which requires us to pass strict lab tests on all material that gets sent out the door. We make sure to see the labs from the material we are buying!

    Does it smell?

No! We put test samples at all retail and farmers markets for folks to try it out! We also take it to our area, state, and federal leaders along with our test results to show how we can help nourish our depleated soils into productive earth!
